4G has finally launched in the UK. But what will it mean for your business? At the end of October EE launched 4G across 11 cities. The company is adding another five cities before Christmas 2012 and plans to expand its network by 2,000 square miles every month. They ambitiously aspire to have 98% of the population covered by the end of 2014.
Due to its high data transfer rate, the main benefits of 4G are:
EE believes that three-quarters of UK businesses are planning to adopt 4G in its first year and has launched a high-speed broadband service with speeds of up to 76Mbps which is already available to 11 million premises.
Because the existing networks can't keep up, they get swamped and can't deliver what the users want and need: seamless access to the internet, media and their contacts. 4G will place mobiles in the VoIP realm and enable them to maximize packet switching. Users will be able to send information much more quickly at a lower cost and make use of a service which is not only quicker but more stable, and a real improvement to the current mobile experience.
What are the benefits for businesses?
Increased productivity - if you have already started mobile working you'll know that an improved network will make work even easier when you're out of the office. But 4G offers more. Video conferencing may mean that even more employees could work from home, helping business to reduce their overheads. And clearly the improved connectivity will make the experience better.
Getting mobile - having a website these days is a given. But increasingly companies are realising the opportunity to make their web-presence mobile ready too. And as 4G grows in reach, so too will the desire and ability to access websites through mobiles. Companies like Amazon and eBay have invested in their sites to ensure they work flawlessly on mobile devices, but the one thing that puts us off using mobile websites like these more is the poor connectivity making the experience slow, clunky and unreliable. 4G will help smooth the delivery of the service and make mobile internet and shopping a more enjoyable and reliable experience.
Customer service - 4G will improve customer service when using mobile sites, and in turn customers will be more inclined to use them. It's not just consumers who will benefit however: with 4G, firms of all kinds will be able to share real-time information with their customers from out in the field. Because customers will have faster connections, businesses can develop services to excite their customers and add value. The opportunities are many and only restricted by our imaginations.
