The 1st of August is World Wide Web Day, commemorating the creation of the World Wide Web (WWW). Invented by English computer scientist, Sir Tim Berners-Lee in 1989 and opened to the public in 1993, the Web became the world’s most dominant information systems platform with it still, today, being the primary way of interacting with the Internet worldwide.
What is the World Wide Web?
The WWW is a collection of webpages found on the internet, invented as a way for scientists to easily share data. The WWW is not to be confused with the internet, which is the infrastructure that the Web is found on.
Why do we celebrate WWW Day?
To celebrate the invention of a revolutionary technology that led to many other creations and the advanced sharing of information, likes of which we have never seen before. While the Web was not created for the general public’s use initially, the introduction of the WWW to the public in 1993 was well-received and, over time, this luxury has become a necessity in our day-to-day lives.
Finding information and staying in contact with people has never been easier. Almost any answer you wish to seek will be on a page somewhere. Web usage is no longer limited to the family computer or for work purposes: we access the Web every day through our laptops, smartphones, tablets and smart watches and for both work and leisure.
What is the history of the WWW?
The WWW was developed by Tim Berners-Lee in 1989 while working for CERN and worked on with the help of Robert Cailliau. The technology was created for scientists to share data between universities and institutes around the world but was eventually released for public use in 1993. The year before Berners-Lee uploaded the first photo to the Web.
The first web server in the US went online in December 1991 due to the work of Paul Kunz and Louise Addis. By the end of 1994, the Web had 10,000 servers and 10 million users (CERN, 2025). Numbers vary, but the number of general internet users are around 5.5 billion in recent years, with the Web being accessed by millions day-to-day.
As a software development company, the WWW has been incredibly important to us. We strive to help other businesses online by working with them to deliver custom made software, designed with their individual business needs in mind. See here how we have helped businesses like yours!
