Is Your Business Ready for Automation?

You’ve looked into the options, you know where you want to take your business, you want to automate with custom software – but is your business ready for automation?

Managing timings, costs and the requirements of your business are fundamental for reaping the benefits that you sow when you automate. Here at Solweb Ltd, we plan, design and implement custom software applications to get your business to where you want it to be and we have the experience in guiding businesses to the steps that should be taken before any automation applications are deployed.

Below is a checklist to help make decisions on what could be automated in your business to ensure everything runs smoothly.

Step One

Consider your business objectives and write them out as a physical list to look at. Are your goals relevant for all of the key people involved? (i.e. the people working directly with your business or the specific processes you wish to change) How would these objectives affect your customers or your employees? Would there be any possible obstacles or ways to improve the goals? How might they present themselves? Once you have a clear idea of your specific business goals and are able to identify the processes which look promising to deliver results by automating, it is time to refine even further.

Step Two

Consider your current strategy and how your list of objectives (long-term or short-term) are relevant to this. Which of your current processes that you have highlighted as a key opportunity or high priority objective could be automated? These should be processes that are already fairly structured and rarely change, such as data inputting on an electronic spreadsheet. Are there any areas of work that your colleagues bring up as an area for improvement? It is important to collaborate with the key people involved with your business to ensure that these processes are discussed thoroughly before any changes are made. Moreover, these discussions may highlight further areas that may be suitable for automating.

Step Three

Make note of possible risks and rewards from automating – will the changeover be simple and streamlined or more complicated to adjust to? How much time and effort will be saved by automating this process? These are just some of the effects of automation that our skilled software developers would discuss with you when designing your custom software.

Step Four

Out of all of the processes listed, select the one that looks to deliver the most benefits. It is always best to start small when implementing new applications so look for a process that will benefit your business and be fairly straightforward. Share your targets with your colleagues, ensure everybody is onboard and understand the possible benefits and risks. You can then set a schedule for automation.
